I had some trouble posting this (the "Publish" screen lacked the green button to publish, ending with the "Scan for Text Analysis" AI bar. I think from the support interaction that it was a browser problem (I use Ecosia, NOT Google--I refuse to use the Google browser anymore). But it still seems ironic that this browser problem never happened in any of my previous posts. . . . . .my mantra these days for just about everything going wrong is "I blame AI."
The fact that I now have to speak to an AI to make a gynecologist appointment (including that I must give the reason I need to visit) makes me want to burn civilization to the ground. Also, an AI assistant straight up lied to me during a typed chat with the cable company and told me it was a human. It was NOT. I’m ready to disappear into some massive forest and live in a cave. AI is a scourge, and we are watching the singularity happen in slow motion.
Yes, the use of some version or other for customer service (was Apple's Siri one of the earliest? I do not want my phone talking to me, so I would never use Voice assistants -- also don't buy Apple) was bad from the start. And yes the AIs are programmed to say or do whatever they need to do to complete the task (including apparently hacking into other AIs!). However, I'm not ready to give the dudebros credit for creating the Singularity because while I admit that's what they are wet-dreaming about, I don't think they are anywhere near achieving it--granted, they can cause economic, environmental, and social destruction on a larger than previously seen scale, but I'm not buying that their fantasy is anywhere near achievable.
Karen Smiley's post that I linked to has excellent information about the reasons why this is so bad (she's an expert in Ethical AI), as well as links to discussions where you can register your support for allowing people to opt out (once) for their Newsletter. The Powers That Be already changed things to allow us to turn off AI on individual posts (without having to let Pangram scan posts before turning it off), so small blessings. She also recommends posting an AI policy (with links to her policy) on your Substack as well. And of course, sharing her post, and recommending it to your readers, is a good way to spread the news!
