ETA: Realized I forgot to add a photo, and decided this one, near the top of the results for “disgust,” was perfect!
Just a quick note since I am deep in proofing and indexing: there are a number of issues with Substack’s funding [may I say, fuck venture capitalists, private equity funding], association with techbros/supporters of the current regime, etc., and, as always in life, having a backup is a good thing.
For more information see these two informative posts:
The potential problems are not new: I’ve been reading about them since I came over here, but dangit, I’ve found so many fantastic writers here that I stayed.
So I’ve set up a backup Writing from Ithilien on ghost.org which I checked out (I’ve been checking out VARIOUS newsletters services, but this is the first time I’ve gone this far). It’s a start-up plan, and I do pay a low fee, but I don’t plan to start charging for membership for the newsletter in the foreseeable future (although the last six months have proved just how BADLY any of us could “foresee” the future, sigh).
I have imported my posts over there, and my membership emails (so you’re a member there), but I will not be posting over there anytime soon (have to figure out more about how it works, and what sort of options I have—cross posting maybe?).
Nothing will change here without announcement (but as I said recently, I won’t be active much because did I mention proofreading and indexing for the “Many Paths” anthology with a due date of *gulp* August 14).
I would strongly recommend those of you posting on Substack regularly export your posts and membership lists (it’s a simple step) because, yeah, everything can disappear fast! It’s a fast, simple step (I’ve been doing it weekly for a while and never had a problem).
