Call for Advisory Board Applications (Deadline November 1, 2024)
New Series: Critical Explorations in Tolkien Studies
Additional information on the series (which will open for proposals in 2025) can be found at my earlier post in which I announced the new series (which will be open for proposal submissions in 2025.
I’ll be posting information on what the proposals need to contain later this summer. for those interested in proposing a monograph or edited collection. Query letters weill be welcome! Part of my job as the series editor is working with people on their proposals to get them in shape to submit to McFarland, so do not let the imposter syndrome hold you back!
Responsibilities
To serve as one of two anonymous reviewers for monographs or edited collections relating to your field(s) of specialization in order to provide objective, professional, and detailed feedback in a timely fashion (ideally, within six weeks but, if necessary, we can allow slightly more time upon request).
Required Qualifications
A completed Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree in your academic discipline
Some academic publication and professional activity on topics relating to Tolkien scholarship (defined as including Tolkien's legendarium, adaptations, transformative works, reception studies, comparative studies, etc.)
Strong time management skills
Preferred: Experience as peer-reviewer for academic journals or academic publishers is a plus.
If you meet the first three qualifications above but have little or no previous experience reviewing scholarship for an academic journal or publisher, I am willing to offer training and mentoring.

Honoraria
McFarland offers peer reviewers either a $100 honorarium, sent via a U.S. check or PayPal, or for U.S.-based readers only, $150 in McFarland books, as determined by list price.

Members of the Advisory Board are free to (and encouraged to) submit their own proposals to the series. I will be the only one who knows the name(s) of scholar and reviewer during the anonymous review process.
